Somewhere between laid-back and ladylike, this style works on long hair or short and is ideal for tucking away unruly bangs. The knot’s location—at the crown of the head—draws attention to the eyes and the cheekbones, giving your face an instant lift. How to: (1) Spritz a texturizing spray on dry hair, scrunching sections to create body. (2) Gather hair into a high ponytail so it rests at the very top of your head. Secure with an elastic and use bobby pins to tack up shorter strands in back. (3) Gently tousle the ends, randomly twisting them under and pinning them around the ponytail’s base. For longer lengths, create a loose bun and secure with pins. What does your high bun look like? Snap a picture and share it on The Clip Artist Facebook Page! How-to courtesy of Real Simple

Who comes up with hair trends? Could it be a celebrity hairstylist? Or the everyday (but fabulous!) stylists like you and me? Or a crazy group of people who think they know hair, so they formed a committee? No matter who starts the trend, it often grows and spreads like wild fire—usually because a celebrity starts wearing that style, and before you know it, everyone is wearing it (everyone and their grandmothers!). Here are some hair trends that have become connected with the celebrities who wore them best: Victoria Beckham/Short, inverted stack Farrah Fawcett/Textured face frame and layers Jessica Simpson/Clip-in hair extensions Jennifer Aniston/Long sleek and the short layer Marilyn Monroe/Classic barrel roll and pin-up Zooey Deschanel/Heavy Bang Halle Berry/Pixie Sarah Jessica Parker/Natural textured waves Pink/The pompadour Audrey Hepburn/Cropped bangs and tight, high bun Meg Ryan/Short- to mid-length shag Whoopi Goldberg/Dreadlocks Which hair trends do your customers request the most? I know there are tons I have done from this list. The most requested is Victoria Beckham’s inverted stack and a Zooey Deschanel bang. It is crazy how one person can really send so many people to their stylists with the same request: Make me look like this! I do […]

Over the summer months I Loved my ponytails because having all that hair on my neck during the hot months was simply unbearable at times. After a while, the standard pony can get a bit boring and repetitive. So I challenged myself this past summer to find different ways to style a ponytail for medium to long hair. I bet you can’t try just one! These styles can be simple for an everyday shopping trip or styled for a more formal event. That is the magic of ponytails! I have taken it a bit further with my ponytail challenge and have shared my thoughts with customers in the chair. Most women with shoulder length hair or longer always ask me, “What is a different style I can do to my hair?” I now simply tell them…it’s the PONYTAIL! Of course I plan to see some raised eyebrows…ponytails are for the gym, right? By explaining how to style them up and how transformational they can be, they become believers. As always, the right products are a must. The range of products used include everything from a volumizing spray to prep the wet hair, to a Moroccan oil that adds shine to that sleek pony and then of course a strong hairspray to […]

By Alison Shipley of ModernSalon.com I found this amazing short crop picture with a cutting HOW TO guide! This short haircut is trendy, cute and edgy! What do you think? Thanks to MODERN Instagram followers @zmicklewright, @rschneckloth and @twistinbangs for collaborating to create this look that we fell head over heels over! CUT: Zack Micklewright (@zmicklewright) began by sectioning off the entire crown of her head. Then, used a 1/2-inch guard on Andis Masters clippers and cut all the way up to the part, only in front of the ear, and just over the ear and around the back. “I used the clipper-over-comb method to graduate from the bottom of the hairline to the crown toward the back, he says. “In the back it’s blended vertically, and on the sides it’s more of an undercut.” Then, he tapered up her front and sideburns and edged her with Wahl Designers over her ears and down the back. Then, he bald tapered her hairline across the bottom in the back. “The hair I sectioned off on top I blended with the long hair in the back,” he says. “And that was pretty much it! This is my first major hair cut on a woman, I […]

We’ve talked in the past about how men continue to put more focus on their appearance and are putting more effort into their hairstyle. Industry expert Ivan Zoot—better known as the Clipper Guy—recently sat down with Short Hair Style to talk men’s hair. Short Hair Style: When a man sits down in a stylist’s chair, what does he usually want? Ivan Zoot: Men are less driven by celebrity style and pop culture than women are. Men are more open to suggestions from the stylist, especially if she’s female. Books and magazines that show hair styles for men are great tools because men are so visual; they can imagine outcomes from pictures. Men may not know the language of hair cutting so I avoid using hair industry jargon and salon terms. For example, to a guy “volume” is a knob on a radio! So instead, I talk about fullness or puffiness — those are words he can visualize. SHS: What are the latest trends in hair styles for men? IZ: Undercutting and disconnection are big in hairstyles for men this spring and summer… not the undercuts we did 10 years ago but cleanly tapered perimeters, disconnected, non-blended tops, and longer top […]
When it comes to men’s hairstyles, it’s been pretty basic for the most part. Typically, there hasn’t been much variation. However, with younger males growing their hair out longer (ala Justin Bieber), we’ve discussed how to talk to a male customer about product. Reports have also come out talking about more customers, particularly men, willing to spend more on their appearance and more males are finally breaking down the best online casino barrier between them and product. Our friends at American Crew see men starting to get a little more aggressive with their style, but it’s requiring them to go back in time a bit. In a look brings the masculine and rugged appearance into a modern and trendy look, the pompadour is making its way back. American Crew sees three variations of the pompadour: the classic, the relaxed pompadour and the side-part “greaser” style. The style requires the top to remain long, while the sides and back are cut short. What are you seeing in the salon? Are you seeing any of your customers coming in for this classic, rocker look?
